What is the English & Wine Program

It is a program that anyone age 21 and older can join, whether you have earlier knowledge about wine or not!

You will learn in English class:

  • How to talk about your wine experiences
  • How to communicate with the winery hospitality staff
  • How to order wine professionally at the restaurant
  • How to describe the wine in your glass

Course Description

Classes are built around language communication in English on wine topics that are related to wine tasting and wine culture. Students will have opportunities to explore the wine regions in the Willamette Valley, the world-famous new-world Pinot Noir-producing area, and the food & wine culture in the ֱcity area. Students will also be introduced to some basic winemaking procedures to better understand wine and how to talk about wine as a profession.

Students will participate in 10 hours of classroom instruction at ֱState University, Monday through Friday, together with out-of-class wine topic-related visits in downtown Portland. The second week will include tours and stay in wine country, visiting wineries, vineyards, and tasting rooms in the Willamette Valley and staying in a picturesque winery guest room.

Program Dates

  • Program canceled for summer 2023
  • Additional program sessions will be offered depending on the demand

Program Fees

  • USD 4,600 (classes, tasting, visiting, and tours)
  • Priceincludes on-campus housing and 3 days stay at the winery (two people in one room). Individual rooms are availableupon request and arean additional charge.
  • Priceincludes transportation related to the activities mentioned in the itinerary only.
  • Pricedoes not include meals. All the food & wine pairing activities in the restaurants would be out-of-pocket payments and participation is not mandatory but recommended.
  • Price does not include transportation from the ֱairport to the PSU dormitory. If you'd like to be picked up at the airport, there will be an additional $75 transportation fee.
  • Prices do not include air tickets or any kind of transportation fee to Portland.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY

  • You must be at least 21 years old to join the program. The legal drinking age in the U.S. is 21.

Deadline AND NOTIFICATIONS

  • You must apply by May 29 to secure on-campus housing; space is limited. Later applicants may need to arrange their own housing and / or pay a higher rate.
  • A 2.75% credit card processing fee will be applied to all credit card payments.

Cancellation and refund policy

  • The program fee includes a $120 non-refundable application fee and $800 non-refundable housing fee.
  • If you cancel 30+ days prior to the program start date, you will receive a full refund of the program fee minus the $120 non-refundable application fee. You will not be refunded the housing fee.
  • If you cancel between the 30 and 14 days prior to the start of the program, you will be refunded 50% of the program fee minus the $120 non-refundable application fee. You will not be refunded the housing fee.
  • If you cancel within 14 days prior to the program, you will be refunded 33% of the program fee minus the $120 non-refundable application fee. You will not be refunded the housing fee.
  • Once the program has started there will be no refunds.
  • If PSU has to cancel the program for any reason before the start date you will receive a full refund.
